Title tag
The name of the page in the tab and, often, in the search result. One job per page.
What does Title tag mean?
The title of one page, shown in the browser tab and often as the blue link in Google. It should say what that page is, in words a customer would use.
Also called: page title, SEO title
Not the same as the big heading
The title tag lives in the page's head, mostly invisible while you scroll. The heading is the large text on the page. They can match. They can also differ slightly when the heading is a full sentence and the title has to stay short enough to read in a tab.
Search engines may rewrite a title in the results if they think another line from the page fits the query better. Write a clear title anyway. You are choosing the default, not issuing an order.
A plain pattern that works
Service, then place or business name, then stop. Emergency electrical repair in Bucks County is a title. Best cheapest emergency electrician near me number one is a title that sounds like an ad and helps no one. Keep the promise inside what the page actually offers.
Every page needs its own. A site where every tab says Home is a site where the owner never set them. The homepage can carry the business name. A service page should carry the service. See meta description for the sentence under the link, which is a different field.
Length and uniqueness
Very long titles get cut off in the tab and in results. Say the specific thing first. Do not repeat the same city on every page if the pages are not about different places. Repetition makes the results look like duplicates even when the pages are not.
We set titles as part of writing the site. If you rename a service, say so, and the title should change with the heading. That is an ordinary update, not an SEO campaign.
An example
An HVAC company had five pages and one title, the business name, copied onto each. In search they looked identical. Giving the furnace page its own title, and the maintenance-plan page another, made the list readable before any other change.
Questions we get asked
Can the title include my town?
Yes, when the page is for people in that area and the sentence stays natural. Do not append five towns. Put the wider area in the body and on the profile.
Do I edit the title in the menu label?
Not necessarily. The menu can say Services while the title says the specific trade and the business. They are different slots. Ask where the title field is if you are in a builder. On our sites, ask us and we will change it.
