Heading

The visible titles that let someone scan. The largest one should say what the page is for.

What does Heading mean?

The visible titles on a page that break it into sections. The main heading says what the page is. Smaller headings mark the parts underneath.

Also called: H1, H2, headline

A structure, not a font choice

Headings are labeled in order. H1 is the page's main title. H2 marks a section. H3 marks a part inside that section. The labels matter to screen readers and to anyone skimming on a phone. Making a sentence big with a font size, without using a real heading, looks similar and behaves worse.

One H1 per page is the calm default. It should agree with the title tag, even if the wording is not identical. A page with no H1, or with five competing ones, makes the topic harder to see.

Writing ones a customer can use

Use the words for the job, the constraint, or the question. What an estimate includes is a heading. Welcome to our family is not, unless the page is actually about the family. Questions are fine when the paragraph answers them.

Do not hide a keyword list in headings that the paragraphs ignore. The heading is a promise about the next block. If you cannot write the block, drop the heading.

How we use them

Service pages we write open with the offer in plain language, then break into the parts an owner told us matter: the work, the area, what you need from the customer, and how to ask. That outline is the audit, turned into headings.

If you later add a section, it needs a heading of its own, not a bold sentence in the middle of a paragraph. Bold is not available in our content fields for a reason. Structure belongs in headings.

An example

A cleaning company's services page was one long paragraph. Splitting it under headings for recurring house cleaning, move-out cleans, and what they do not take made the same facts scannable. The H1 stayed the service, not a slogan.

Questions we get asked

Can my logo be the H1?

No. The logo is an image or a link home. The H1 is text that says what this page covers. A homepage H1 can include the business name and the work.

Should every heading include my city?

No. Say the area where it helps, usually once near the top and on the profile. Repeating the city in every H2 reads as stuffing.
