Page speed

How fast the page becomes usable. Photos are the usual culprit, not the font debate.

What does Page speed mean?

How quickly a page becomes usable after someone opens it. Slow pages lose impatient visitors and make the business feel less careful than it is.

Also called: load time, site speed

What people mean, and what they measure

Owners say the site is slow when a thumb sits on a blank screen or when tapping a button does nothing. Tools report a pile of lab scores that do not all describe that feeling. Use a score as a clue. Use your phone on a normal connection as the decision.

Google's PageSpeed Insights is a fair public test. The website grader links out to it because the grader cannot see your layout or your images. Do not pay a stranger to move a score by a hair while the hero photo is still a camera original.

What actually weighs a local site down

Oversized photos, a slideshow that loads six of them, and a handful of chat, pixel, and booking scripts from other companies. Each script is a small product with its own delay. Add the ones you will truly answer. Skip the ones that came with a theme.

Hosting quality matters when the server is starved or far from your customers in a way you can feel. It is rarely the first lever. Compress the photos, serve them at the size the layout uses, and remove the widgets nobody staffs. Alt text still belongs on the images you keep. Speed work is not an excuse to leave them unlabeled.

A reasonable bar

The page should open, the request path should be tappable, and the text should be readable without a wait that makes you wonder if the tab crashed. Chasing a perfect lab score on a photography-heavy remodeler site can mean hiding the work that sells the job.

We build with that bar in mind and we will say so if a third-party booking tool is the thing slowing the page. Daily backups do not make a page faster. They make a bad experiment reversible, which is when you try removing a widget.

An example

A roofer's homepage opened with eight full-size drone photos in a rotator. On a phone at a curb it stuttered. Swapping in three compressed photos of real jobs, with the request form above the rotator, made the page feel finished. The drone set stayed in a gallery for people who went looking.

Questions we get asked

Does a faster site guarantee more calls?

No. A slow site can lose people who were ready, and a fast site can still be unclear. Speed removes a reason to leave. The words and the offer do the convincing.

Should I install a speed plugin and hope?

Only if someone who understands it is watching. A plugin that breaks the booking form is a loss even if a score improves. On our hosting, ask us before you add one. Two small updates a month can cover a photo pass.
