Google Search Console

Google's own notes on how it sees your site. The place to look when a page will not show up.

What does Google Search Console mean?

A free Google tool that shows how your site appears in Google Search: queries, indexing problems, and the sitemap Google has seen. It does not show visits the way Analytics does.

Also called: Search Console, GSC

A window, not a scoreboard

Search Console reports queries that led to an impression or a click, pages it has indexed, and reasons it skipped a URL. The numbers are Google's, delayed, and incomplete. They are still the most direct public view you can get without paying for a rank tracker.

It will not move you up the page because you opened it. Fixing a real exclusion, such as a page blocked by accident, can change whether you are eligible to appear. Eligibility is not a position.

The reports that repay an hour

Pages: which URLs are indexed and which are excluded, and the stated reason. Sitemaps: whether the XML sitemap was received. Performance: which queries already show your site, so you can tell if a page answers a different question than you intended.

Ignore anyone who exports this into a scary slide and sells you a retainer on the back of it. Read one exclusion, in English, and decide if the page should be public. Indexing is the idea behind that report.

Ownership

Verify the property with a Google account the business keeps. DNS verification and HTML file verification are both common. If a former vendor verified it, get yourself added as an owner before the relationship ends.

Console is also where you learn that an old builder URL is still the one Google knows. Pair that with redirects during a move. We can help you read a screen on a call. We will not promise a chart goes up.

An example

A pest-control owner thought a new termite page was invisible because it was not on page one. Search Console showed the page had not been indexed at all, because a builder setting marked the whole site noindex during the draft and nobody turned it off. Removing the block was the fix. The rank was a later, separate question.

Questions we get asked

Is Search Console the same as my Business Profile?

No. The profile is the map listing. Console is about the website in organic results. You want access to both, on accounts the business controls.

Do I have to use it?

No, the site can launch without it. It is the first tool to open when a page you care about cannot be found by searching its exact title. Set it up when you care about that diagnosis.
