CMS
The editing layer behind the pages. Useful when the right people can open it, a burden when they cannot.
What does CMS mean?
Software for editing the words and pictures on a website without rebuilding the whole thing from scratch each time something changes.
Also called: content management system
An editor, not a design
A CMS stores pages as pieces: a heading, a paragraph, a photo, a list of services. You change a piece and the public page updates. WordPress is one CMS. It is not the only one, and a CMS is not automatically easier than a short email to the person who already updates the site.
A website builder also lets you edit, but the editing screen and the hosting are usually the same subscription. A CMS can sit on hosting you chose. The label matters less than this question: after launch, what is the ordinary way an hour change or a new service gets onto the page?
Who is supposed to log in
Some owners want a login and will use it. Many will not, and the login becomes a second product nobody opens. For those owners, a studio that edits for them is the system. Artol hosting includes two small content updates a month, so the ordinary change does not require you to learn an editor.
If you do want a login, ask what you can break. A wide-open editor lets a well-meaning person restyle the whole site on a Sunday. A narrow editor lets them change a price or a paragraph. Match the width to the person who will actually be in there.
What we will and will not claim
The $0 down Artol site is fully custom and hosted by us. We do not describe it as a WordPress theme with a logo dropped in, and we do not require you to pick a CMS before the audit. If a named platform is a requirement, say so on the kickoff and we will tell you whether it fits this offer or belongs on packages.
A CMS does not write the truth for you. Empty fields stay empty. The content checklist is still the pile of facts, whether they land in a CMS, a builder, or a draft we send you.
An example
A cafe owner was promised they could edit the specials themselves. The CMS login works, but the specials live in a text box the theme ignores. The useful fix is either a field the homepage actually reads, or a standing update from the studio. The software name on the proposal never mentioned that gap.
Questions we get asked
Do I need a CMS?
You need a way to change true facts without a new project. That way might be a CMS login or two included edits a month. Needing the letters CMS specifically is rare for a small local business.
Is WordPress the CMS you will use?
Not as a default. WordPress is a reasonable choice for some sites and a heavy one for a simple brochure. Ask on the call if you have a reason it must be WordPress. We will not pretend every custom site is WordPress under the hood.
