Artol vs Squarespace for a small business
Squarespace sells designed templates you edit. We sell the writing, the design, and the hosting as one job.
Squarespace is known for templates that already look finished. You still choose one, adjust the layout, and supply the words, the photos, and the policies. Owners who like that control, and who have the hours, can end up with a handsome site. Owners who do not will stall on the same blank sections.
Artol does that work for you. The price is $0 down and $249/mo hosting, live in less than a week, fully custom. Below is what Squarespace's own pricing page showed on 31 October 2026, and where the two products stop being comparable.
Squarespace's four plans that day
On 31 October 2026, Squarespace's pricing page listed Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced. Each plan showed two figures. The lower one is the annual plan and the higher one is the monthly plan. Basic was $19 on an annual plan and $25 on a monthly plan. Core was $29 and $39. Plus was $49 and $65. Advanced was $99 and $139. Squarespace says an annual term is discounted relative to paying monthly, and that an annual website plan includes one year of domain registration on its cheapest tier, for a new domain, with limits described on the page.
The page also says you can stop a plan. It does not describe a build fee, because you are the builder. Fluid Engine, their drag-and-drop editor on version 7.1 sites, is included. So are templates, SSL, and a mobile layout. Basic allows 2 contributors. Core, Plus, and Advanced allow unlimited contributors.
Commerce fees, from Squarespace's help center
Squarespace's help article on selling, updated 28 October 2026, says the older Personal, Business, and Commerce plan names have been replaced by Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced for current billing. It says Basic includes a commerce transaction fee and that Core removes that fee. It also describes card processing through Squarespace Payments as a separate charge. This guide does not repeat the percentage, because the help page is the source and it can change. Read it here: Selling on the Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced plans.
If you only need a brochure, a menu, and a link to the booking tool you already use, you may never touch those fees. If you plan to sell on the site, the fee is part of the comparison, and our $0 down offer is the wrong product. Online stores are on packages.
Template control versus a done site
| Compare | With Artol | On Squarespace |
|---|---|---|
| Your role | A kickoff call and a review of the draft | Design, writing, and settings |
| Look of the site | Fully custom | A template, then Fluid Engine |
| Starting bill | $0 down | The plan you choose |
| After launch | $249/mo hosting, two small edits a month | The plan, for as long as you keep it |
| Contributors | You email us; we edit | 2 on Basic, unlimited on Core and above |
| Local profile | Google Business Profile setup included | You set the profile up yourself |
Which one matches the week you have
Choose Squarespace when the template is the point and you will maintain it. A designer-owner, a photographer who wants to crop every page, or a cafe that already has photos and a patient editor can do well there. Core is the step where Squarespace's help page says the commerce transaction fee drops, if selling on the site is the goal.
Choose Artol when you want a deep business audit and competitive market research, and you do not want the site to wait on your evenings. You pay $0 down and $249/mo hosting. 12-month ownership terms: 12 months of hosting at $249/mo, then month to month. Leave earlier and the remaining hosting or a buyout of the build is due. We are 100% US-based, made in the USA, in Yardley, PA, and we reply within one business day.
A fair limit on this comparison
Squarespace can be the cheaper line on a spreadsheet and still cost more if the site never ships. Our fee can be the larger line and still be the shorter path if you will not open the editor. We are not going to pretend those are the same kind of cheap.
The cost guide keeps the three models side by side without pinning a builder's price. Wix and GoDaddy are separate, because their products are not this one.
Questions we get asked
Are the Squarespace prices on this page current forever?
No. They are what squarespace.com/pricing showed on 31 October 2026. Check that page before you buy. Annual and monthly figures differ.
Does Squarespace include someone to write the site?
The pricing page describes templates, an editor, and support. It does not describe a studio that audits your business and writes the pages. That work is yours, unless you hire it separately.
Why not quote Squarespace's card fee as a percentage?
The help center is the source, and it can change. This page links it and describes the difference between plans without copying the rate.
What do I pay Artol?
$0 down and $249/mo hosting. 12-month ownership terms: 12 months of hosting at $249/mo, then month to month. Leave earlier and the remaining hosting or a buyout of the build is due.
Can Artol move a finished Squarespace site into this offer?
We build a new custom site. We do not keep editing inside Squarespace. If you need the words and the structure rethought, that is the audit, not an export.
