Wix vs. a done-for-you website: which is right for your business?
An honest look at building it yourself on Wix versus having it written, built, and hosted for you.
Wix is a website builder: you pick a template, drag in your text and photos, and publish it yourself on a monthly plan. A done-for-you website is the opposite arrangement. Someone else plans, writes, designs, builds, and hosts it, and you approve the result. Both can produce a perfectly good site for a small business. The difference is who does the work, and what that work costs you.
This guide compares the two fairly, including where Wix is the better choice. We build done-for-you sites with $0 down and $249/mo hosting, so we have an obvious interest, but a site you never finish helps nobody, and some owners genuinely prefer to build their own.
The short answer
Choose Wix if you enjoy building, have the evenings to spend on it, and want to control every word and pixel yourself. Choose a done-for-you site if you would rather spend that time on paying work and want someone else responsible for keeping the site written, current, and online.

When Wix is the better choice
If you like this kind of work, Wix is a reasonable tool. You can try layouts, rewrite your own copy at midnight, and publish without asking anyone. For a side business or a very early idea that may change shape every few weeks, that flexibility is worth a lot.
It also suits owners who already have strong writing and an eye for design. The builder handles the technical side; the result depends on what you put into it.
When done-for-you is the better choice
Most of the work in a good small business site is not technical. It is deciding what to say, in what order, to which customers, and then keeping it current. If you would rather not do that yourself, or you have started a builder site more than once and never finished it, a done-for-you site removes the bottleneck.
With us, that means a deep business audit and competitive market research before anything is designed, a fully custom site written for your customers, Google Business Profile setup, and daily backups. You review and approve; we handle the rest.
Moving from Wix later
Starting on Wix does not lock you in forever, but it is worth knowing how a move works. Wix does not let you export a site to another host, so the design itself is rebuilt. Your words, photos, and domain come with you.
If your domain was registered through Wix, it can be pointed at a new host or transferred out. We handle that step as part of launch, and the website cost guide covers what else to check before you switch.
Questions to settle before you choose
- How many hours can you realistically give the site?
Count writing, photos, setup, and updates over a year.
- Do you enjoy this kind of work?
If yes, a builder may be the better fit.
- Who will keep it current?
Hours, services, and photos change. Someone has to update them.
- What will the first year cost in total?
Plan fees, apps, and your time, or a build fee and hosting. The cost calculator adds it up.
- Do you need an online store or a custom app?
Questions we get asked
Is Wix good enough for a small business?
It can be. Wix is a capable builder, and the result depends on the time and skill you put into it. The question is less whether Wix works and more whether you want to be the one doing the work.
Can I move my Wix site to Artol?
Yes. Wix does not export sites to other hosts, so we build a new fully custom site, reuse your words and photos where they help, and point your domain at it.
Is a done-for-you site more expensive than Wix?
In plan fees alone, usually yes. Once you count your own hours and the cost of a site that never gets finished, the gap is smaller. Run your numbers in the cost calculator.
Can I still make changes myself?
You send us the change and we make it. Two small content updates a month are included in the $249/mo hosting, with a reply within one business day.
